New Delhi: The Environment Ministry on Wednesday asked the scam-tainted Adarsh Housing Society to submit its reply to the show cause notice issued to it by December 24 and also granted it an opportunity to present the case in person before the ministry on December 28 if it so desires.

The show-cause notice issued under the Environment Protection Act seeks an explanation from the housing society as to why its 31-storey building at Colaba in Mumbai should not be demolished for allegedly violating green laws.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has accepted the company's request for an inspection of the "originals of some letters/minutes and other documents referred to in the notice" issued to the housing society on December 20.

The Ministry has also asked the society to submit its response to the show-cause by December 24 and made it clear that no further extension of time for filing the reply would be given, said its order.

This is for the second time that the society, which is in the eye of a storm for constructing the 31-floor high-rise allegedly ignoring various norms, has been given extension by the Environment Ministry since November 12 when it was first served notice.

The Ministry had slapped the notice on the society questioning why the structure which was allegedly built in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notification and environment by-laws should not be demolished.

The society had on November 24 sought four weeks' time but the ministry had on November 29 agreed for a seven-day extension till December 7.

But before the expiry of the notice period the society sought an extension of one more month, which was not agreed to by the ministry which gave just seven more days to it.

Besides green violations, the Adarsh society is also facing CBI case for "fraudulently" converting the residential block originally meant to be a six-storeyed apartment block in Mumbai's upscale Colaba for housing widows of Kargil war heroes.
