A simple test by drilling through one portion of the Anna Arch beforehand would have prevented the delay in bringing down the structure, said a Highways Department official connected to the Anna Arch removal project at Aminjikarai here.
A crane was scheduled to reach the site very late on Monday night, as vehicular movement during normal hours would be impeded otherwise.
Meanwhile, the traffic arrangements remained the same throughout Monday, with vehicles moving slowly with severe traffic snarls during the peak hours. Signals were turned off, and traffic was manually directed at several places to ensure that vehicles continued to move.
Traffic policemen at the arch said that diversions would be made depending on the space taken up by the second crane. “If it does not occupy the entire road, traffic will flow as usual, except that vehicles will not be allowed to turn left from Poonamallee High Road. In case we need to block the road from Koyambedu towards Aminjikarai, vehicles will be diverted to the other side of the road,” said a policeman.
The traffic police team on the spot was frazzled, as everyone passing by slowed down to take one last look at the arch. Anand, who runs a shop opposite the Anna Arch, said, “Most of my regular customers stood for a while longer, just talking about the work going on. As their bikes were blocking the traffic, the policemen had to repeatedly ask them to move.”
