Asaram Bapu should pay up for violence: HC
Gujarat HC orders a case be filed against the ashram.

New Delhi: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday ordered a case be filed against the ashram of spiritual guru Asaram Bapu located in Motera locality of Ahmedabad, in connection with the attack on journalists on July 18.

The court also ordered Asaram Bapu to compensate people injured in the Motera village clash and also directed the police to file FIRs if anyone approaches them with complains.

The ruling came after an NGO, Jan Sangarsh Manch, filed a PIL demanding the court directed the state government to set up a probe into the attacks, directed allegedly by the supporters of the spiritual guru.

The clashes broke out after the mysterious death of two children in ashram premises.

The dead bodies of two children, staying at the ashram ‘gurukul’, were found near Asaram Bapu's ashram on June 7.

Following the incident, the people of Motera village near Ahmedabad, surrounded the ashram and clashes broke out between inmates and villagers.

SC refuses to restrict media

On Monday, the Supreme Court declined to impose any restrictions on the media while reporting about goings-on at the ashram.

A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam, however, sought response from the Centre regarding the laws and guidelines, if any issued by the government, to regulate the reporting by the media, both electronic and print.

Asaram has termed the media reports as a violation of his Fundamental Right to Life with Dignity, guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.
