Ask Mamata to end fast: Kalam to PM
Mamata Banerjee's refusal to call off her fast has sparked concern in the highest echelons of politics in Delhi.

New Delhi: Singur is simmering and how. Mamata Banerjee's refusal to call off her hunger strike has sparked concern in the highest echelons of politics in New Delhi.

Expressing concern over the Trinamool Congress leader's deteriorating health, President APJ Abdul Kalam on Thursday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene and find a solution for the stalemate.

He asked the Prime Minister to request Mamata Banerjee to call off her fast. Banerjee has been fasting for 25 days now and is on oxygen support.

She is fighting the West Bengal government's decision to take land from farmers in Singur and give it to Tata Motors so they can start their small car project there.

Kalam's plea to the Prime Minister came after he spoke to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Thursday morning - the second time they spoke in the past four days.

"The President spoke to the Prime Minister today and expressed his serious concern and emphasised the need to find a way to end the stalemate and to enable her to end the fast," a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson was quoted by PTI as saying.

Kalam's concern comes close on the heels of Buddhadev Bhattacharjee sending a letter to Mamata Banerjee promising to study her allegation that farmers were forced into giving up their land.

However, Mamata Banerjee is reportedly not impressed by the Chief Minister's claim and has refused to budge from her stance.

Mamata has the full support of the NDA in her endeavour, with BJP President Rajanth Singh having visited her to extend the party's backing.

The Prime Minister had on Wednesday instructed the central authorities to extend all medical care for Banerjee in view of deterioration in her health.
