New Delhi: The vote count in Assam threw up several surprises with the Congress seemed headed to power once again and a fractured AGP suffering a huge setback despite speculation to the contrary.

The biggest surprise, though, was for the Congress camp. Party state president Bhubaneshwar Kalita, the man who was widely projected as a possible chief ministerial candidate, lost the polls from Rangiya constituency while Congress candidates elsewhere registered unexpected wins.

Another Congress heavyweight and Assam Transport Minister Anjan Dutta lost to Pradip Hazarika of AGP by 5289 votes in Amguri constituency.

Congress sitting MLA Devanand Konwar was defeated by Kushal Dowari (Ind) by 1500 votes in Thowra constituency. Sitting Congress MLA and senior leader Sarat Borkataky retained his seat defeating Binarani Bhumij by 34,990 votes.

Sarat Saikia, the sitting Congress MLA, retained the Mahmara seat beating Hiranya Kumar Konwar by 3688 votes. Congress MLA Pranab Gogoi also retained 108 Sibsagar seat beating Pranabjit Chaliha (Ind) by 1900 votes.

Among other Congress candidates, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi won from Titabor, Robin Bordoloi registered an impressive victory in East Guwahati, Himanta Biswa Sarma retained his Jalukbari constituency and Pradyut Bordoloi won from Margerita.

Former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta (AGP-P) won from Barhampur while AGP president Brindaban Goswami (AGP) lost the Barsola seat. He, however, won from Tezpur.

Among other results, AGP's Ramendra Narayan Kalita (AGP) emerged victorious in Guwahati West and Thaneswar Basumatary IND(BPPF-H) won by 17803 votes in Chapaguri. AGP's Jagadish Bhuyan and Atul Bora(Jr) lost the polls.
