A farmer from Domjan Haven, Assam named Kiran Fukan has made it to the headlines after he successfully cultivated watermelons on 16 bighas of land. According to the Local 18 Assam, Fukan has produced about five tonnes of watermelons per bigha. This is the first time a farmer from Assam has accomplished this rare feat.
Fukan has managed to do this with the help received from the Department of Agriculture & Horticulture, Assam. He is now expanding its operations and supplying the produce to nearby towns and cities of Assam including Guwahati, Sivasagar, Tinsukia and Golaghat. Fukan said that he managed to earn from Rs 500 to Rs 3 lakh from the sale proceeds of the watermelons. This time, the Domjan Haven farmer said that he aimed to add more profit to his work at the farm.
Like Fukan, many farmers have started cultivating watermelons on a government-registered farm for agricultural-related purposes. They are doing so in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture & Horticulture.
Another aspect has been observed in the Domjan Haven farms situated near the Kaziranga National Park. The agriculturalists are protecting their farms by installing solar-powered electric fences. Solar power fencing can protect farms to a great extent in many ways. Some of them are-
1. Keep the animals away: Farmers often suffer losses when wild animals trespass into their crops and destroy them, thus causing a great deal of suffering to the farmers. Solar power fencing that the animals stay away from the farms due to the current induced by the batteries. An added advantage to this is that the current is not powerful enough to kill the animals, thus preventing any deaths as well.
2. Lower cost: Solar fencing requires less cost for the set-up and material in comparison to other fences (barbed or woven wire).
3. Ease of construction: Solar Fencing is simple and easy to build. It can be installed quickly and with minimum tools which will save time and funds as well.
4. Flexibility: Wire spacing and the design of the solar fence can be modified to control a variety of animals.
