RAMANATHAPURAM: Residents from Muthuramalinga Thevar Nagar in Rames waram submitted a petition to Superintendent of Police (SP) Anil Kumar Giri claiming that they were cheated of Rs 45 lakh by a couple, Muniyasamy and Pandiammal of Madurai—who allegedly have the backing of some DMK henchmen, including  ‘Attack’ Pandi’, a trusted lieutenant of Union minister M K Alagiri.Muniyasamy had in 2010 asked the residents to deposit their savings in a private finance company in Madurai, promising high returns within five months. The depositors were given five cheques with the assurance that they could withdraw the amount from the bank after three months. More than 40 people, including women, deposited their savings of `45 lakh. However, they realised that they had been cheated when the cheques were not honoured by the bank. When asked to return the money, Muniyasamy reportedly refused. On Wednesday, the residents gathered at the district police office and submitted a petition to the SP.  Irulandi, who had deposited `50,000, claimed that Muniyasamy had the support of some DMK leaders.
