Mangalore: A Bajrang Dal member has been arrested by Mangalore Police for abusing a social activist, threatening to sexually assault her and attack her with acid on Facebook. The activist Vidya Dinker filed a police complaint against right wing groups for protesting against the screening of Shah Rukh Khan's film Dilwale.
The groups hurled abuses against Dinkar through their Facebook pages. Dinkar took up the matter with the police after which an FIR was registered against 22 Bajrang Dal members. Police are on the lookout for other suspects.
Vidya Dinker, co-ordinator of Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development, had advocated for the screening of Dilwale, which was opposed by some groups after Shah Rukh Khan allegedly made some statements about "rising intolerance" in India.
Dinker in her letter said police action on 'immoral policing' in Dakshina Kannada district seemed to be inadequate though the city police commissioner had taken some initiative.
Dinker said she had received offensive comments on social media after she filed a complaint against Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists for forcibly stopping the screening of Dilwale.
The comments, allegedly posted by Bajrang Dal city Co-convener Puneeth Raj Kottari on his Facebook account, were later removed after she sent a link to the city police commissioner, Dinker claimed.
In a statement, VHP Dakshina Kannada district President Jagadish Shenava said they were not continuing with the protests as the theatre owners themselves were not ready to screen the movie. Protests would be held if they attempted to screen it, he said.
