BANGALORE: “Why is Justice Bannurmath remaining silent? He must refuse his post in the midst of such a controversy over  his appointment,” said former MLA A K Subbiah.Addressing members of the progressive forum at a meeting here on Monday, he questioned the forum’s delay in appointing a new Lokayukta for the state as well as the implementation of Jutice Santosh Hegde’s report on illegal mining.“We need to focus on black money being held inside the nation by religious institutions as well as creating fast track courts to deal with corruption,” said noted writer and movie director Baragur Ramachandrappa. He stated that the forum would further hold rallies and protests to spread awareness on these issues among the public.Speaking at the meeting, CPI(M) leader G M Nagaraj questioned why Team Anna was silent when Justice Santosh Hegde and his office was being attacked in the state. “They supported Kiran Bedi but stay quiet on Karnataka and Hegde, why do they not stand up for him?” he asked. He also alleged that the BJP government was transferring corrupt officials to the Lokayukta office and then blaming the office for being corrupt.“The Lokayukta office previously had the option of choosing its own officers, that has been taken away by the government. Gujarat has been delaying the appointment of a Lokayukta for nine years; looks like Karnataka will follow suit,” he said. The forum was later scheduled to submit a memorandum to Governor H R Bharadwaj requesting him to hasten the appointment of a new Lokayukta and to implement the final report illegal mining report in its entirety. The forum also announced plans to felicitate former Lokayukta at a function on December 4 in order to show their support for his actions.
