Gadinglaj town of Maharashtra which is on the border of Karnataka observed a total bandh on Thursday in protest against the death of Dr Chetan Patil, who was killed in the recent communal clashes that shook Belgaum.

All markets, commercial establishments, schools and colleges remained closed and buses and autorickshaws stayed off the roads.

Members of NGOs, clubs, businessmen and residents took out a silent protest march demanding a thorough probe in to the murder of Patil, who is a resident of Gadinglaj.

Students and staff of Sadhana Vidyalaya (Gadinglaj), of which Patil was a former student, also joined the rally.

The protestors submitted a memorandum to the regional commissioner and condemned the alleged negligence of Belgaum police in Patil’s murder case.

Maharashtra police had beefed up security to prevent any untoward incidents at Gadinglaj on Thursday.

Special police forces, including the Maharashtra State Reserve Police were deployed to maintain law and order.

Later, the rally reached the residence of Patil and condoled his death.

It may be recalled here that Patil, who completed his MBBS in Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of Belgaum and was a PG student at Bagalkot, had gone to Belgaum to meet his friends, where he was stabbed to death on the Old Pune-Bangalore Road.

Meanwhile, as a camera of a photo journalist was damaged in the recent clash, the Belgaum Press Photographers’ Association has urged the state to provide protection to cameramen.
