A 26-year-old migrant from West Bengal was beaten to death in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, by cow vigilantes who suspected him of consuming beef. Another injured

A 26-year-old migrant from West Bengal was beaten to death earlier this week by a mob in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district over suspicions that he had consumed beef.

The victim, identified as Sabir Malik, was lured to a local bus stand on August 27 under the pretense of selling scrap. Sabir was targeted by a crowd who accused him of eating beef, according to the First Information Report.

A video, accessed by News 18, captured part of the assault, showing the attackers using rods. According to police, the accused — Abhishek, Mohit, Ravinder, Kamaljit, and Sahil — confronted Malik and another migrant from Assam, accusing them of eating beef.

After some bystanders attempted to intervene, the attackers moved the victims to a separate location where they continued to assault Malik until he succumbed to his injuries.

The police have arrested five individuals and detained two juveniles in connection with the attack. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Charkhi Dadri DSP Dheeraj Kumar said, “A migrant labourer was beaten to death by some people. A case has been registered under BNS and 7 people including 2 juveniles have been arrested. Police is working on the case actively and the accused have been taken on police remand and are being questioned…”

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini Reacts

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini called the attack “unfortunate” and pointed out it was “not right to use words like mob lynching”.

“It is not right to say things like mob lynching, because a strict law has been made in the Assembly for cow protection and there is no compromise on it…I want to say that such incidents should not happen and these incidents are unfortunate…” he said.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra demanded justice for the victim killed by “BJP-fuelled hatred”.

“Haryana cow vigilantes kill 26-year-old migrant Sabir from Bengal on suspicions that he ate beef. Justice is required for him too and countless like him killed by BJP-fuelled hatred,” she said in an X post.
