Bengal’s Purulia Zoo Modifies Diet Of Animals To Protect Them From Summer Heat
Purulia’s Surulia Zoo has taken immediate actions to protect its wildlife from the extreme heat.

This year’s blazing heat in India has left many suffering from dehydration, heat stroke, dizziness and fatigue. Just like humans, animals and birds are falling prey to the soaring mercurial levels. To make sure that the summer heat does not make the wildlife at the zoo sick, Purulia Zoo (West Bengal) authorities have taken immediate action. Just like humans, now a strict diet will be maintained for the healthy well-being of these animals. All over India, the heatwave has made it quite difficult to step out of the house. Purulia’s Surulia Zoo, located on the outskirts of the district, has taken immediate actions to protect its wildlife from the extreme heat and humidity. The forest department has taken measures to keep the zoo inhabitants strong and healthy. The authorities have changed the diet chart to make sure they remain cool and hydrated.

In Purulia’s Surulia Zoo, animals are being fed 50-70 percent less than what they were normally being fed to ensure that their body does not heat up from within. Along with this, they are also being offered drinking water with ORS and glucose mixed in it. For hydration, cucumbers and their leaves are being fed to the deer. Red watermelon is being offered to bears. Foods that are high in water content are being offered to the animals. A water pool has also been constructed in the zoo.

At various places, colourful umbrellas have been installed to offer shade to animals like Hyenas. A few shallow pools have also been constructed for Sambar, Cheetah and deer to drink water. Agro nets have been installed to make sure the deer can roam the cages freely in the intense heat, but it will offer them a green shade. Cold water is always kept in the trough so that the animals can quench their thirst. For monkeys and birds, sprinklers have been kept to help them keep cool. Additional District Forest Officer of Kansabati North Forest Division, Purvi Mahato said, “We are trying to take care of animals and birds as much as we can.”

It has been found that till now, no animal or bird has faced any health problems. The staff has maintained considerable vigilance in one of the popular tourist attractions in Purulia.
