BANGALORE: The selection of Shankar Mahadev Bidari as the new Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP) of the state on Wednesday could lead to a fresh controversy.Even as Bidari received the baton from outgoing DGP N Achutha Rao, DGP Home-guards, Fire and Emergency Services, A R Infant, another contender for the post, decided to go to court over the posting.Expressing disappointment on being overlooked despite his seniority, Infant, a 1977 batch IPS officer who is the senior most of the contenders, said, “Injustice has been meted out to me and my seniority and merit have been overlooked.” Pleading ignorance about the reasons why he was overlooked, Infant said that he had a clean slate in the department.Earlier in the day, passing the baton to Bidari, Achutha Rao termed it a moment of freedom. “It feels like freedom now, after 35 years of service. It has gone fast like a roller coaster. My career has been satisfying, thanks to the support of my fellow policemen,” said Rao. He added that he had no doubts in Bidari’s ability. “He (Bidari) has proved his mettle in both executive and administrative roles. I wish him all the luck in his new role,” added Rao. After receiving the baton, Bidari said: “I have got this opportunity after 40 years of public life. I would like to thank my parents, well wishers and the state government for this,” he said. He added that in his new role, he would focus on sustaining the image of the state police force.“Karnataka police has a 126-year history and we have been an able force. I will uphold this in my new role. I call upon all my colleagues to serve and protect the citizens without any prejudice or partiality,” said Bidari, who was serving as DGP, CID.
