Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election results were declared on December 23, 2014 throwing up a badly fractured mandate. More than a month has passed since the results but the state is yet to get a government.
It seems now the Peoples Democratic Party and Bharatiya Janata Party - the two biggest parties in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly - are coming closer to form government in the state.
"A seat sharing arrangement (between BJP and PDP) is there. If everything goes well, this will create level of comfort between the two parties," said PDP spokesperson Naeem Akhtar on the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.
Both PDP and BJP have decided to contest for two seats each of the four Rajya Sabha vacancies going to polls. While PDP named Nazir Ahmed Laway and Fayaz Ahmed for two of the four Rajya Sabha seats that are up for re-election on February 7, the BJP nominated Shamsher Singh Manhas and Chander Mohan Sharma.
The four members whose terms are expiring are Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saif-ud-Din Soz. Their six-year term ends on February 10. National Conference leaders Ghulam Nabi Wani and Mohammad Shafi will see their term ending on February 15.
Former chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah hit out at the two parties. He said if the two parties have announced an arrangement for the Rajya Sabha polls, they must do it for the state too.
"NC and Congress have decided to combine forces to file a joint candidate for RS polls in J&K to snatch a seat from the "unholy alliance," he tweeted.
PDP is the single largest party with 28 seats, BJP is second with 25 seats, National Conference has 15, Congress 12 while seven seats have been won by Independent and smaller parties.
