A youth has been booked for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of a community by posting objectionable remarks on a social networking website.
District Magistrate NP Singh told reporters in Muzaffarnagar on Saturday that a case was registered in Shamli police station against Gaurav Tomar under 66A of IT Act for his alleged hate remarks on Facebook.
Action was taken after representatives of Muslim organisations led by the UP president of Jamiat-ulema-e-Hind Maulana Jamaluddin met the district magistrate to lodge their protect.
They demanded strict action against those involved in posting remarks against religion.
Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts were rocked by deadly communal riots that over 60 people dead last year.
BJP MLA Sangeet Som was arrested for allegedly uploading a video on Facebook which sparked communal tension. A Special Investigation Team is probing the case against the BJP MLA, who is out on bail.
