CHENNAI: A sudden rain on Thursday did not deter the spirit of either the fasting agitators or the motley crowd gathered for the third consecutive day in support of Anna Hazare at Thiruvanmiyur here.Though their numbers slipped to around 150 in the morning, the stir gained momentum in the evening with employees of corporate houses, college students and senior citizens joining in large numbers. As many as 300 supporters raised slogans as they held aloft lighted candles in the evening. Though heavy rains lashed the city suddenly, the gathering did not disperse to look for cover; their slogans rather turned vociferous. Only after the elders requested the youngsters to come inside the hall, did the protesters come in for shelter.Despite the rain, former Chief Election Commissioner T S Krishnamoorthy reached the venue around 8.40 pm. The gathering welcomed him with slogans. “When I was working with the Government, I refused to do anything wrong even if it was an order from the minister. I am happy to see that people have come in support of Hazare’s fight. In the initial stages, we might face problems, but in the long run, we will be winners,” he said. Chandra Mohan, 31, a film director, who dedicated the past three months for India against Corruption movement, said, ”Every individual should be part of this movement. Thousands of Eelam Tamils were killed in Sri Lanka, lakhs of farmers were committing suicide due to the anti-farmer policy of the government.”Savya, 23, who had completed her Masters in London, is another volunteer. “Our family has suffered due to corrupt politicians,” she said, adding “Unless every individual joined the movement, it was difficult to safeguard the nation.” Later, a group of students took out a motorcycle rally.
