Hyderabad: Coolpad Communications India, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based mobile phone manufacturer China Wireless Technologies, plans to introduce 15 more CDMA and GSM handset models in the Indian market over the next 12 months, Managing Director of Coolpad Sami Al-Lawati said.
The company is also looking at setting up an R&D centre in India with an investment of Rs 100 crore, he told reporters here today. "We are looking at launching 15 more models, 2G and 3G enabled GSM and CDMA phones, powered by Linux and Android operating systems in the price range of Rs 2,500 to Rs 20,000," he added.
Announcing the launch of its Android CDMA phone, D530, in Hyderabad, the MD said though the company's sales in India were less up-till last year, they are expecting to sell 1 million CDMA phones in the next 12 months, primarily driven by the demand for high-value, data-enabled phones in the country. D530 will be marketed exclusively by Reliance Communications as a bundled offer as well as in the open market for Rs 7,999. The handset is first Android-based model from Coolpad's stable to be introduced in India and comes with features like high speed data of 3.1 megabit per second, a 3.5-inch touch screen and a 2 megapixel camera.
Sami Al-Lawati said Coolpad, which spends around 8 per cent of its annual global sales on research and development (R&D) every year, is looking at setting up an R&D centre in India at an investment of Rs 100 crore. However, he added, "We are yet to decide on the location for the centre."
