BARGARH: Another young farmer ended his life by consuming pesticide on Thursday morning, barely two days after Dayanidhi Bhuye, a farmer of Barahakanta village in Attabira block of the district, committed suicide. Identified as Uttam Majji (28) of Khuntapali village under Bargarh Sadar police limits, he was declared brought dead at Bargarh district headquarters hospital.   Majji is survived by his wife, a two-month-old baby girl and mother.  Majji owned 10 acres of land and was looking forward to repay his debts after two successive crop losses. He had availed Rs. 1 lakh loan from Agricultural  Development Bank for rabi crop besides a private loan and was under tremendous pressure to repay them.  Hoping that the cultivation this season would bail him out, he had procured fertiliser on credit for the ongoing kharif crop and was pestered by the fertiliser dealers to clear the credit. Farmer leader Ashok Pradhan said such deaths were unfortunate but the fact  remains that cultivation has become a curse both for marginal and big farmers due to lack of government  support.  When the farmers looked for seeds, they were not made available and they had to procure them at a high rate from the market. Similar was the condition in fertiliser procurement. Had the government provided fertilisers in time the crops could have been saved and so also the farmers’ lives, he added. Majji is the fourth casualty in the district.
