New Delhi: The Delhi Police arrested two Pakistani nationals on Monday under the Foreigners Act. The two men are suspected to have links with the ISI. With the arrest of the two men, the Delhi Police claimed to have foiled an ISI plan to ensure smooth operations by a woman spy in the country.
Imran (40) and Soofia Kanwal (38), both from Karachi, were apprehended from New Delhi Railway Station on December five on a tip off, Ashok Chand, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), said.
They had entered the country without any valid documents.
"We had a tip off that two Pakistani nationals are going to illegally enter India through the Indo-Nepal border. On December five, we got inputs that they have illegally entered India through Sanouli border in Gorakhpur of UP and would be coming to Delhi by Gorakhdham Express.
"On this information, a trap was laid at New Delhi Railway Station and two persons were apprehended," Chand said.
During interrogation, he claimed, Imran told police that he originally belongs to Ahmedabad but migrated to Pakistan in 1988 and since then has settled in Pakistan and has acquired Pakistani citizenship.
He floated his own textile company in Pakistan but in 2007-08, he incurred huge losses and was in deep financial crisis.
"The Pakistani Intelligence agencies approached him and told him that they would provide him monetary support if he would act for them. Accordingly they told him in March 2011 that he has to go to India and settle a lady as a Resident Agent in India.
"He along with Kanwal entered India and were to proceed to Agra, where he would be met by one of his associate. On reaching Agra, they would have received further instructions. His associate in Agra has been identified and efforts are on to apprehend him," Chand said.
The passports of Imran and Kanwal issued by Pakistan but having no Indian VISA and neither stamp of entry into India, National Identity Card of Imran, Citizenship card of Kanwal, a driving license of Gujarat in the name of Imran, an Election Identity card issued in the name Imran and other documents were recovered.
Earlier, the Delhi Police had also arrested seven suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives Bihar, Delhi and Chennai.
Sources said that the Indian Mujahideen module was believed to be behind the three biggest terror attacks in the last two years - the German Bakery blast, Chinnaswamy Stadium blast and the Jama Masjid firing took place in Delhi.
