Delhi gangrape shook nation's conscience: Pranab Mukherjee
We are living in a difficult time. I am not only talking about the difficult time from political perspective, but mainly from the social perspective, Mukherjee said.

Guwahati: The recent Delhi gangrape shook the conscience of the nation, President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said and underlined the need to ponder and "reset the moral compass" of the society during this difficult time.

"Sometimes certain events shake the national conscience. Recently the brutal rape on a young woman in Delhi shook the conscience of the whole nation and it compelled us to sit back and think where we are moving," Mukherjee said. He was addressing a gathering on the occasion of presentation of Srimanta Sankaradeva Award and Asom Ratna Award here.

Srimanta Sankaradeva Award was given to actress Sharmila Tagore for her contribution to Indian cultural life and for her role in women and child empowerment in the country. Asom Ratna Award was given to late novelist and social activist Indira Goswami.

During the speech, Mukherjee highlighted the need to introspect over the incidents and events in the country both from political as well as social perspective.

"We are living in a difficult time. I am not only talking about the difficult time from political perspective, but mainly from the social perspective. Is it not the high time for all of us, irrespective of where we are and what we are, to think and ponder over? Being the social being, being the product of the social investment are we not going to ponder over and reset our moral compass," he said.
