New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the government of the national capital to take necessary steps to built temporary night shelters for the homeless in the city. The court also asked the government to utilise closed government buildings as temporary night shelters.

A division bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice VK Jain said: "We expect the government to make temporary arrangements to accommodate homeless in closed government buildings."

"Accommodation for homeless should not be taken lightly," the bench added.

Appearing for the Delhi government, senior lawyer Nazmi Waziri told the court that "within one week or 10 days, the government has come up with more than a dozen temporary night shelters".

Waziri said that 10-12 night shelters would be made in east Delhi and seven buildings have been finalised as temporary night shelters in the city where homeless would be accommodated soon.

The court also asked the Delhi Development Authority and other authorities to give no-objection certificates to the government within 24 hours to built night shelters in such buildings.
