New Delhi: Delhi Police on Friday rubbished all allegations of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that it is conducting a biased investigation into the alleged suicide of Rajasthan farmer Gajendra Singh. The police defended not sharing information with a magisterial probe ordered by the Delhi government.
Delhi government sources said the District Magistrate is seeking legal opinion on filing a criminal complaint against the police for not cooperating with the investigation. The complaint will be under Section 188 of the IPC which pertains to obstructing public servant from doing their duty. The DM wants witnesses to come forward and record their statements.
However, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said, "Delhi Police is acting according to rule of law, communication between government department should not be leaked." Police added that a magisterial probe is never ordered in a case of unnatural death.
The Delhi District Magistrate had set a deadline for Delhi Police to join the investigation by 11:00 AM on Friday or else face action. The DM's orders came as the police rejected a probe ordered by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's government.
In stern words, the DM on Thursday hit out at the Delhi Police for refusing to join the magisterial probe ordered by the Delhi government. The DM in a letter, wrote that it was 'wilful neglect', against ' provisions of law' and obstructing duty of public servant'.
In its FIR, the Delhi Police had accused AAP workers of abetment to suicide and obstructing a police official from carrying out his duties. Investigators said their probe reveals that AAP workers stopped police from sending the victim to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital while insisting that he was a party member and should not be taken in police van which resulted in considerable delay.
In the report submitted to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Delhi Police Crime Branch officials added that AAP leaders and workers in fact instigated Singh to commit suicide. The FIR has been registered for abetment and obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty.
Gajendra Singh, a resident of Nangal Jhamarwada village in Dausa, tied a cloth to a tree and committed suicide at AAP's rally venue. He also left a suicide note stating that he had three children and had been disowned by his father due to crop damage after recent rains and hailstorm.
