DMK holds rally in support of Sri Lankan Tamils
The rally was to demonstrate support for the Tamil cause.

Chennai: The DMK-headed Sri Lankan Tamils Rights Welfare Committee on Sunday took out a massive rally in support of the Sri Lankan Tamils here, calling for an immediate ceasefire in the embattled northern and eastern parts of the island nation.

DMK's newly appointed Treasurer and Local Administration Minister M K Stalin led the rally, which covered about two km from Munroe Statue to Chepauk Guest House.

Senior DMK leaders, including Electricity Minister Arcot N Veeraswamy and members of the Committee from DMK's alliance parties like the Congress and others also participated in the rally.

The protesters raised slogans against the Sri Lankan government and called for an immediate halt to the Army's offensive.

They carried placards carrying such messages and also black balloons to condemn the Sri Lankan government.

Later, addressing the gathering, Stalin asserted the DMK's commitment for the Sri Lankan Tamils cause and said it was his father and Chief Minster M Karunanidhi who had forwarded a resolution in the DMK's general council in 1956, calling for rallies and public meetings in support of Sri Lankan Tamils.

"We have to keep lending our voice of support for the Sri Lankan Tamils," he said.
