New York: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who has remained single till now, has said that she would like to tie the knot at some stage of her life, but didn’t divulge when or who that person might be.
In a TV programme, Rice, who would turn 52 this November, reportedly said that she would surely want to get married when she finds the right man.
Her comments about her marriage assume significance in the wake of speculations about her alleged romance with Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay. Only a couple of weeks back the love affair was reported by the American press.
Replying to a question whether she would like to get married, Rice said: “Sure. Oh. Wouldn’t we all love to find somebody that you’d want to live the rest of your life with? Sure.”
“But I never thought you’d want to get married in the abstract. You wanna get married to someone. And, so I’ve just never particularly want to get married to someone. But who knows? Maybe one of these days,” The Nation quoted her as saying in the interview on CBS’ 60 minutes magazine programme.
Her alleged romance with Peter hit the headlines when Rice spent some time last week in Canada’s Nova Scotia with him.
On Wednesday, the New York Times showed a picture showing the pair holding hands and affectionately looking at each other in the eyes.
However, an official at the US State Department played down the love affair, saying: “It’s one of those things in which the media is reading too much.”
State Department spokesman Sean McCormack was even more dismissive when he revealed that Rice had a good laugh when she first read the story in the media.
He emphasised that she had a good working and professional relationship with MacKay as “she had with a lot of her counterparts”.
