CHENNAI: The number of posts for which no nomination was received has come down drastically for the current local body elections compared to the 2006 elections due to the conscious effort made by State Election Commissioner S Ayyar. ‘No nomination’ posts stood at 356 in 2006 and is just 57 this time despite the increase in the number of overall posts. The SEC said at the very first meeting for the local body polls, he asked the Municipal Administration and Rural Development Departments to conduct a survey and find out the reason. The SEC said in most of these cases, the posts were reserved for Scheduled Tribes and if there was no presence of STs there, then no nomination would be received. In that case, such places have been reserved for other categories as per the existing system. He added that the reservations have been done strictly in accordance with the rules and in a scientific manner so that no section of society was affected. The districts where no nomination was received include Pudukottai (5), Ramanathapuram (7), Ariyalur (8), Nilgiris (1), Tiruvannamalai (4), Trichi (1), Thanjavur (1), Tirupur (1), (Vellore (6), Villupuram (1) and Virudhunagar (3), Madurai (2) and Coimbatore (6).
