Every household in a tiny village in Arunachal Pradesh has become a crorepati overnight, thanks to the payment released by the government towards acquisition of their land for the Army.
The ministry of defence released cheques worth Rs 40.8 crore to 31 families of Bomja village in Tawang district as compensation for acquiring a little over 200 acres of land, the Hindu reported.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu handed over the cheques to the heads of the families at a small ceremony on Wednesday.
The families had let the Army acquire their land to set up key location plan units of its Tawang Garrison five years ago.
The land acquisition is part of Army’s efforts to ramp up its presence in Arunchal Pradesh, especially the western part of the state, to counter Chinese aggression here.
The family that gave away the biggest chunk of land received Rs 6.73 crore, while another family received Rs 2.45 crore. The rest 29 families received a compensation of Rs 1.09 crore each.
With this, Bomja has become one of the richest villages in the country. Some reports even proclaimed it as the richest village in Asia, but an official said that it cannot be said with certainty right now.
The chief minister thanked defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman for releasing the amount and said that more such compensation in lieu of land acquisition by the Indian Army is under process by the central government.
Last year too, the defence ministry had released Rs 54 crore for 152 families of three villages in the state.
