New Delhi: Volkswagen motorsport boss Kris Nissen has ruled out the German automobile giant joining Formula One either as a team or an engine supplier from 2013 when the sport is likely to see changes in engine specifications (from the current V8s to 4-cylinder turbo-charged).
"It's too expensive and too far away from our street cars," Nissen told IBNlive.com when asked about the obstacles in VW joining Formula One.
The FIA is pushing for regulation changes in engine specs in order to make them more economical and relevant to car manufacturers.
The sport's governing body had stated that they wanted to improve sustainability as well as address the needs of the automotive industry.
The 4-cylinder engines are seen to be more relevant to road cars. VW had recently announced its plan of entering the World Rally Championship (WRC) from 2013.
When asked as to why had VW decided to join WRC from 2013, Nissen said the new technical regulations fitted with VW's philosophy concerning the development of production vehicles.
