Jodhpur: An FIR has been lodged by the police against the self-styled godman Asaram in the case of sexual assault filed on the complaint of a 15-year-old girl.
He has still not been called for questioning as the Rajasthan Police said that they want to collect all the evidence before proceeding further in the matter.
On the political front, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot is playing it safe and and is treading on cautious grounds ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls keeping in view the the self-styled godman's huge fan following in the state.
Political leaders have claimed that the charges against him could be a tactic of the UPA government. Madhya Pradesh Industries Minister Kailash Vijaywargia alleged that the charge of sexual assault against Asaram Bapu could be 'politically motivated' as he has been critical of top Congress leadership.
"Asaram is a saint. He openly speaks against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi. It might be possible that the charges against him is a part of a political conspiracy by Congress," Vijaywargiya said.
Uma Bharti too shared the opinion and said that the charges could be politically driven.
A Special Investigation team has been formed to probe the charges and police teams have been sent to Chhindwara. The interrogation though can still take time. Meanwhile, the girl has confirmed the details of the crime site making it clear that Asaram and the girl were present on site.
Asaram's office has denied the charges and have maintained that he was not in Jodhpur on August 15.
