Flood situation eased in Koraput district on Tuesday with several rivers receding.
The water level of the Indravati, Jonra, Surli, Seberi, Soptadhara and in Kolab reservoir has fallen with no rains reported in the catchment areas in the past 24 hours. However, about 10,000 villagers of eight panchayats in Kotpad block are still marooned.
Road communication to the district was finally opened on the day. Heavy rains had disrupted traffic for the last three days.
Meanwhile, the Revenue Department has started surveys in different areas to assess loss of life and property. Preliminary reports indicated that the Jeypore sub-division recorded the maximum damage to crops, houses and property.
The flash floods had damaged 200-km road stretch and over 100 culverts in rural Jeypore. Besides, paddy crop worth crores of rupees was washed away in the rainwater.
Jeypore Sub-Collector Birendra Korkora said 517 houses were damaged in the district headquarters and reports from other areas are awaited.
Similarly, the flood situation in Kotpad block showed signs of improvement with no reported loss to life. Official sources said villagers of Chandili, Gumunda, Sadranga, Damanhandi, Guali, Girla and Murtahandi panchayats in the block have been asked to remain alert.
