If you’ve ever lived in Mumbai or Kolkata, you would know what it feels like to grab a frankie on your way to work. These wraps are first made like a chappati. Then, appropriate fillings are placed over it. The chappati is then rolled and is ready to eat. A paper rolled over the frankie at one end keeps your hand from getting burnt. Now, such stalls are becoming popular in Chennai also. The frankie is one of the favourite snacks of Mumbaikars. Known for their fast-paced life, Mumbaikars love to have a quick bite and rush to work. “It has become famous in Chennai too,” says Jaideep Sheth, owner of the kiosk, Tibbs Frankie. “Mostly, we find youngsters from nearby schools and colleges coming to our kiosk for a quick bite and rushing back to their classes.”At `30 a piece, a vegetable frankie gets prepared in less than five minutes and provides instant gratification. I chose to have a chicken keema frankie, which cost me `50. The frankie, straight out of the frying pan, gave a burning sensation to my tongue. But it was worth it. The chicken was soft and jelled effortlessly in my mouth. If you’ve a big appetite, you can choose to have another one from the large variety of frankies on offer ranging from paneer frankie, gobi manchurian frankie to cheese frankie, all within a reasonable price range of `30-50. There are 30 such kiosks of Tibbs Frankie in Chennai, from OMR to Chintamani. So, the next time you feel hungry, just look out for an all-red outlet at any junction or crossing.
