Karun was awarded 'Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters' award.

New Delhi: The French Government honoured Keralan filmmaker Shaji N Karun with the "Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters" award in the capital on Friday evening.

In the past the same award has been given to the likes of Shah Rukh Khan in recognition for his contribution to the world of Indian culture and Indo-French cultural ties.

Shaji Karun, already a National Awardee for his film Thampu is also the first filmmaker from Kerala to have competed and premiered his films in the official sections at the Cannes film festival.

Recently Shaji Karun was embroiled in a conflict with the Kerala government regarding a campaign against his film Kutty Srank at the Goa film festival.

However, the Kerala government has denied receiving any notice of attempts by the Academy office-bearers of indulging in a 'vilification campaign' or ignoring any director.
