HYDERABAD: A 19 year-old student, who holds a black belt in martial arts, committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in Begum Bazaar on Saturday evening.According to police, Surabhi Gupta, studying BCcom second year took the extreme step after being depressed over defeat in a karate match. She was a student of Vanita Mahavidyalaya Degree College located near Exhibition grounds and resided at Hindi Nagar in Begum Bazar. She is the daughter of a bangle merchant, Vijay Kumar Gupta.The incident came to light at about 5.30 pm on Saturday when Vijay returned home. “The main door of the house was locked from inside. As there was no response from Surabhi to his calls, Vijay broke the main door latch with help from neighbours and found his daughter hanging from the ceiling fan in the bedroom,” Begum Bazar sub-inspector Sriram Saidababu said. There was no suicide note but family members said Surabhi was very depressed since the morning after she lost a karate match during the college annual sports meet. “Family members of Surabhi informed us she got selected to participate in the national karate championship at New Delhi and the defeat in a college sports meet came as a big shock,’’ the SI said.Surabhi reached home in a sad state of mind. In the evening, Surabhi’s mother went to meet their relative and Surabhi went to meet her father at the shop. She returned home at 4 p.m and hung herself.Based on the complaint lodged by her family, a suspicious death case was booked under section 174 of CrPC. The body has been handed over to the family after the post-mortem.
