SALEM: A 19-year-old girl on hunger strike in front of her lover’s house for the last five days was torched in the early hours of Monday, allegedly by the latter’s relatives. One person was arrested in this connection. The girl was rushed to the Salem GH soon after the incident and is still undergoing treatment there.Sudha, daughter of Rangan of Pakkaliyur near Sankagiri, was in love with Prabakaran, son of Mani, who lives near her house. After facing stiff opposition from the boy’s family, Sudha and Prabakaran eloped some 20 days ago and reportedly stayed in the house of one of the relatives of Prabakaran at Karungalpatti in Erode.On coming to know about Prabakaran’s whereabouts, his parents and relatives forced him to return home. When he refused, they allegedly attacked him and Sudha. Following this, the Karungalpatti Police registered a complaint. Later, both of them returned to their houses thinking it was unsafe for them to live together now.Five days ago, Sudha went on a fast in front of Prabakaran’s house demanding that she be united with him. During night hours, she slept in the open on a cot outside Prabakaran’s house.Infuriated over the protest, Prabhakaran's relatives are said to have poured kerosene on the girl around 1.30 am when she was resting on the cot and set her on fire. In her complaint, Sudha accused Prabakaran’s brother Raja and his relative Palani of indulging in the heinous act.The Karungalpatti Police have arrested Palani and are on the lookout for Raja.
