Govt gets EC nod to scrap import duty on sugar
Scrapping of import duty will result in retail price of sugar coming down.

New Delhi: The Election Commission has cleared United Progressive Alliance Government's decision to scrap the import duty on sugar, allowing it to add another feather to its cap.

Scrapping of import duty will result in retail price of sugar coming down.

Once Model Code of Conduct is in place, every popular decision by the Cabinet requires the Election Commission's nod before being formally announced.

On April 9, the Cabinet had decided to allow public sector trading firms MMTC, STC and PEC, and agri-cooperative NAFED to import 10 lakh tonnes of refined sugar at zero duty by August.

The move is primarily meant to stabilise sugar prices which have shown increasing trend lately. A notification abolishing the 60 per cent duty will be published by the Finance Ministry soon.
