New Delhi: The war of words between West Bengal Governor Gopal Gandhi and state CPI-M continues. After facing criticism from Gandhi, CPI-M has accused him of being partial.
The ruling CPI-M said on Saturday that Gopalkrishna Gandhi has 'out stepped the constitutional limit of the highest office of the state' and his statement would embolden the forces determined to destabilise peace in the state.
The hard-hitting statement came a day after Gandhi indicted the state government and CPI-M, saying the manner in which the recapture of villages in Nandigram was being attempted was totally "unlawful and unacceptable".
The CPI-M statement issued at a press conference by its state secretary and Politburo member Biman Bose said the party was pained at the Governor's statement.
"The Governor's statement will embolden the forces determined to destabilize peace and democracy in the state in a most undemocratic manner."
“The Governor has failed to maintain neutrality and he has not acted in an impartial manner, “ he said.
Meanwhile, tension in Nandigram continues as two people were killed after suspected CPM activists open fire on a rally by Trinamul-backed land rights activists.
At least 10 persons were injured in a firing allegedly by CPI-M workers who attack on a procession of the anti-acquisition 'Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee' near Maheshpur this morning.
Police at the nearest outpost did not act to stop violence and left in a hurry, they said. Neither the local police nor the East Midnapore police Superintendent S S Panda were available for comment on the fresh violence.
Callers to the mobile of Panda, who recently took over as the SP in place of G Srinivas, were greeted with the message: "the subscriber is switched off". West Bengal IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said in Kolkata that there were reports that bombs were thrown on a procession, but no detail was available at the police headquarters.
Eyewitnesses said that all the injured were rushed to a local hospital and primary health clinic.
