Chandigarh: Sampat Nehra, a 28-year-old inter-state criminal wanted in 45 cases, was arrested on Wednesday by a special task force of Haryana Police. Nehra originally hails from Rajgarh in Rajasthan and was arrested from Hyderabad’s Miyapur region.
A national-level decathlon silver medallist, Nehra was carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his head – Rs 1 lakh by Haryana police and Rs 50,000 each by Rajasthan and Punjab police. He was wanted in 12 murder cases, 6 attempt-to-murder cases, 2 prominent extortion and 5 prominent dacoity cases.
He had various pending cases against him in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Rajasthan.
The arrest is significant as Nehra is also a key member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Lawrence Bishnoi is the same gangster who had recently issued a death threat against Salman Khan, claiming that the Dabangg actor will be killed in Jodhpur.
Bishnoi is currently incarcerated in Jodhpur jail and Nehra was handling the operations of the gang in his place and was also the sharp shooter of the gang.
SP Ashwin of the STP said, “Nehra was arrested from the Cyberabad area in Hyderabad. The efforts were taken under the guidance of Haryana’s DGP B.S. Sandhu and Additional Director General of Police, Crime, P.K. Aggarwal. Inspector Pradeep’s team conducted the operation with full dedication under the personal supervision of IG STF Saurabh Singh and DIG STF Sateesh Balan. Nehra will be brought here on transit remand for further investigation”
He added, “So far, only Nehra has been arrested. But we are hopeful of solving more cases and gathering information after interrogating him.”
Nehra is also the rival of wanted gangster Vicky Gounder who was killed in an encounter near the Punjab-Rajasthan border in January this year. Son of a retired Chandigarh police assistant sub-inspector Ram Chander, Nehra grew up in a neighborhood of cops.
He studied in DAV College where he became the campus chairman of SOPU (Student Organization of Punjab University) and was actively involved in student politics.
Nehra was first arrested in a carjacking case in January, 2016. In June 2017, Nehra, along with undertrial prisoner Deepak Kumar, escaped from incarceration after throwing chilli powder into the eyes of a policeman in the General Hospital in Panchkula. The entire incident was caught on the hospital’s CCTV cameras.
Just after a month, Nehra along with Deepak and another accused, Bhola, fired seven bullets at 25-year-old rival gangster Lavi Deora in Kotkapura. Deora, who was member of the Vicky Gounder gang, had been standing in a ticket queue for a fair at the grain market at the time of the shooting.
In a Facebook post, Nehra also took responsibility of the attack on Punjabi singer Parmish Verma of the Gal Ni Kadhni fame. Parmish was shot along with another on the night of April 13 in Industrial Area, Phase 8, Mohali.
However, another gangster, Dilpreet Singh Dhahan aka Dilpreet Baba, also claimed responsibility of shooting the singer in another Facebook post which included a picture of himself holding a pistol and another picture of Verma with a cross drawn on it.
In April this year, Nehra threated the owner of Kumar Brothers, a leading chemist shop Chandigarh, with extortion. He allegedly made a WhatsApp call from an international number and demanded a ransom of Rs 3 crore.
