HASSAN: The doors of the Hasanamba Temple, one of the historic temples in south Karnataka, will be opened on October 20. The temple will remain open only for eight days and will be closed on October 28.Goddess Hasanamba is traditionally considered one of the powerful deities in south Karnataka. Lakhs of devotees from various parts of the country, and some even from abroad, will visit the temple and offer the deity gold and silver ornaments and saris during their visits.Chief priest of the temple H R Sureshwar said as per tradition, followed for about 80 years, the temple should be kept open for only eight days, and they continued the tradition to protect its sanctity. A large number of devotees would flock to the temple to see a lamp and freshly boiled rice when the doors were opened, he said. The doors would be closed after the lamp was lit and the rice is offered to the goddess every year, he added.People believe that the lamp will be lit and the rice will remain fresh throughout the period till the doors are opened next year. The temple committee and Muzrai Department have jointly taken up the temple renovation work with the Rs 1 crore allotted by the then Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on a request from district in-charge minister V Somanna two years ago.The work is nearing completion, and the sanctum sanctorum has already been renovated without any disturbance caused to the original structure. The temple will be open round the clock. Security will be strengthened at the temple during this period. This becomes necessary as quite a number of politicians visit the temple every year apart from the swelling crowds of devotees. Former CMs like Veerendra Patil and B S Yeddyurappa and all of his Cabinet colleagues had visited the temple. This time, too, the district authorities and the temple committee have decided to increase security at the temple as CM D V Sadananda Gowda and many of his Cabinet colleagues, Opposition leaders and Union ministers are likely to pay a visit.
