KOCHI: Under the aegis of district panchayat, the state-level steering committee of the Matsya Keralam Project has decided to rear 32,400 Karimeen (Pearl Spot) fingerlings in 320 household ponds. This would mark the beginning of a project which could rear Pearl Spot farming at a profitable rate. Ferro cement tanks are used for cultivating the fish. “The district panchayat will provide a financial assistance of Rs 15,000 for constructing ferro cement tank. Apart from this, Rs 18,000 will be provided to the farmers. The district panchayat has also prepared a fish farmers development action plan for which Rs 1.9 crore has been earmarked,” said district panchayat president Eldose Kunnappally.Besides, there is a project to spread freshwater fish farming in 200 hectares. The project aims at the harvest of 600 tonnes of pearl spot fish during 2011-12. “The survey is almost complete. We have identified about 424 farmers for the fish farming in the household ponds. “About 55,000 pearl spot fingerlings have been distributed to these farmers. Around 10 lakh fingerlings have been distributed to the farmers who was selected for the freshwater fish farming project,” said E G Georgekutty, Fisheries Deputy Director.Twenty farmers were also identified by the authorities who would be provided with subsidy to start pearl spot cage culture. It is the Fish Farmer’s Development Agency which has devised this scheme with Ernakulam district panchayat president as its chairman.
