New Delhi: Just when it seemed the winter was gone, it's made a surprise comeback.
The summer capital of India, Shimla recorded 90 cm of snow in the last 48 hours, the heaviest since 1990.
With the town experiencing the season’s first snowfall, cold conditions intensified across Himachal Pradesh and mercury dipping to below freezing point today in several parts of the state.
The heavy snowfall has come as a good surprise for tourists, but has severely affected vehicular movement as many high-altitudes areas have been cut off from the rest of the state.
A senior official was quoted by news agency PTI as saying that at least 150 buses owned by the state road transport corporation were stranded at various places since Sunday.
The weather office said about 20.6 cm of snow has been recorded in Shimla between Sunday night and Monday afternoon.
PTI quoted Met Office Director Manmohan Singh as saying that about 90 cm snow in Shimla in past 48 hours was the heaviest recorded since 1990.
While Dundi in Kullu district recorded 20 cm snow in the past 24 hours (till 0830 hours today), it was 14 cm in Solan Nallah, 2 cm in Petsio in Lahual and Spiti and one cm in Udaipur. Fresh snowfall has also been reported from tourist destinations of Kufri and Manali.
The weather office forecast rain and snow at many places in the next 24 hours.
