The Maharashtra Assembly has passed a privilege motion against the state Director General of Police, P S Pasricha.

Mumbai: Amid intense activity in the Mumbai police in a bid to crack the 7/11 serial blasts case, Maharashtra Director General of Police P S Pasricha on Friday came under attack in the State Assembly with the Opposition moving a privilege motion against him.

It is alleged that Pasricha had made remarks that some local politicians were under the scanner of investigators probing the Mumbai blasts.

Moving the motion, BJP group leader in the House Gopinath Munde said "as per norms, when the House is in session, ministers and officers are not supposed to make statements on important issues outside the House. Pasricha had breached these norms".

"When the all the Opposition leaders attended a high- level meeting in the wake of the blasts, Pasricha, who was present at the meeting, did not utter a word about connection of some politicians in the blasts but he later made this comment while speaking to media which is a breach of our privilege", Munde added.

Pasricha was "creating confusion" among the public by alleging that politicians had a hand in the train blasts here, he said adding "people have started looking at us in a suspicious manner after these comments".

Charging that police officials were making baseless allegations against politicians to hide their dereliction of duty, Munde demanded the dismissal of Pasricha and Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy.

"The Deputy Chief Minister was making a solemn statement on the blasts in the House and outside the House, while Pasricha was telling the media about the likelihood of some politicians' (being) behind the blasts and also about police keeping an eye on their movements," Munde said.

Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar said he would get the privilege notice examined "as per procedure".

Pasricha did not say whether the people he referred to were suspected to be involved in subversive or criminal activities in the state. He had also given no details about the 'politicians'.

Pasricha also stayed away from naming any particular party or person.

However, he admitted that according to intelligence there were some connection between foreign funding and local politicians.

But Pasricha had evaded a query on a media report which claimed that a South Mumbai politician, who has considerable clout among the minority community, was under the scanner of intelligence agencies.

"Some political figures in Maharashtra are under the police scanner for their suspicious actions and action will be taken against them at an appropriate time," Pasricha had said on Wednesday.

"Unke harkate thik nahin hain (their activities do not seem to be right)," he had allegedly told reporters in Mumbai. He added that the police was keeping a close watch on these political figures.

One outcome of the privilege motion could be a call for an apology by the DGP in the House.
