New Delhi: The H1N1 Influenza A virus (swine flu) has been wreaking havoc across the world.
Here is how the virus behaves inside the human body in combination with other diseases.
Asthma: Viral infections like swine flu make breathing worse and is more likely to cause viral pneumonia. The advice is to carry on managing one's asthma as one normally would. Contact the doctor if breathing difficulties continue.
Diabetes: The virus can increase blood sugar levels and uncontrolled blood sugar can prove fatal. Keep a check on blood sugar levels regularly.
Heart disease: Those with heart disease and hypertension need to be more cautious. Swine flu could raise blood pressure and put an extra strain on the heart. So closely monitor the blood pressure.
Children under the age of five are more vulnerable to develop viral pneumonia due to swine flu. Don't administer over the counter painkillers like Brupfen and Aspirin as these could affect the liver in combination with the flu. Doctors prescribe paracetamol for fever.
In case of pregnant woman low immunity makes them more vulnerable. Initial data suggests higher chances of fetal death plus complications like viral pneumonia.
