Hyderabad: The annual two-day fish distribution camp which began in Hyderabad on Wednesday can claim to be India's biggest free medicine mela.

Lakhs of people suffering from asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory illness have gathered in Hyderabad with a hope of a miracle cure. The Telangana government has made elaborate arrangements for the "Fish Prasadam".

A herbal yellow paste is prepared with a secret formula and stuffed inside a live Murrel fish which is 2 to 3 inches long and slipped into the throat of the patient.

The Baithini Goud family, who have been administering the fish medicine since 1845, say the cure is scientific. The Goud family takes no money for the medicine.

"This is scientific. People have taken our samples to labs in Japan, Germany and got them tested. The concept is that when live fish moves, wagging it tail and fins through the throat, it clears all congestion. Thus, providing cure to asthma," Harinath Goud said.

For vegetarians, separate medicine is prepared with jaggery. While many rationalists question cure merely as the blind faith, the Bathini Goud family say the cure is permanent and effective.

"Inhalers and nebulizers are temporary cure. After their effect is over, the problem comes up again. This fish medicine is permanent cure, provided patients follow the complete course. It is ayurvedic and has no side effects," Goud said.
