IAF jet shoots down 'unidentified' balloon-shaped object in Barmer
A fighter jet was scrambled after an unidentified balloon-shaped object created an alarm

Jaipur: A Sukhoi 30 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force on Tuesday shot down an "unidentified" balloon-shaped object in Barmer district of Rajasthan after an IAF radar picked it.

An investigation is on but defence sources said the object is likely to be a meteorological balloon.

"Between 1030 and 1100 hours today, an unidentified balloon shaped object was picked up by IAF radar. An IAF fighter was launched which intercepted the object and brought it down. Further investigation is underway," an IAF spokesperson told PTI.

After the unidentified object created an alarm, a fighter jet was scrambled.

IAF officials said the force was on high alert due to Republic Day and the object was flying in from the western sector.

The incident happened in Barmer, nearly 500 km from Rajasthan capital Jaipur, where some villagers reported an incident of certain metal pieces falling down from the sky.

Panic-stricken people from Gugdi village first reported that a few "bombs" had fallen from the IAF jet.

But police and IAF sources later clarified it was just scrap from the spent shells that fell on some of the houses and caused minor damages.
