New Delhi: The awards season is upon us and this is the time when the best of Indian cinema is judged, reviewed rewarded for entertaining us in the past year. 2013 has seen a mixed bag of films comprising both popular and art house cinema. In our maiden initiative, we have selected nominees in various popular categories and will let our readers decide the outcome. It is a month long poll, so go ahead and vote for your favourite performers of 2013.
From the colourful ghagras in 'Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram leela' to the chiffon sarees of 'Lootera', Indian textiles and styles dominated the films last year. While on one hand we saw Indo-western fusion clothes in Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola', 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' costumes were typically of the by gone era.
Here are the nominees in the Best Costume category.
Maxima Basu and Anju Modi (Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela): Riot of colours, intricate embroidery, ornate blouses and flowy ghagras. Anju Modi brought alive the rich colours and textiles through her costumes in 'Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram leela'.
Niharika Khan (Kai Po Che): While 'Ram Leela' celebrated the rich heritage of Gujarat, Niharika Khan kept the look of 'Kai Po Che', based in Gujarat as well, very contemporary and realistic. Something which was more relatble with the audience.
Subarna Ray Chaudhuri (Lootera): Chiffon and dhakai sarees with long sleeve blouses, tweed coats and wollen pants brought back the 1950s era in 'Lootera'. The look was simple, understated and very vintage.
Dolly Ahluwalia (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag): Rural punjab in the 1940s had to be projected on screen. Cotton kurtas and printed patialas with chiffon dupattas completed the look.
Payal Saluja (Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola): Imran Khan sported a beard, wore kurtas with jeans to look like a yong man from a village in Haryana. Anushka's look was more experimental as she was seen wearing brocade kurtis with ankle length ghagras- a modern spin off of what women wear in rural Haryana.
