It is believed that if a director finds the right production designer, he wins half the battle.

New Delhi: The awards season is upon us and this is the time when the best of Indian cinema is judged, reviewed rewarded for entertaining us in the past year. 2013 has seen a mixed bag of films comprising both popular and art house cinema. In our maiden initiative, we have selected nominees in various popular categories and will let our readers decide the outcome. It is a month long poll, so go ahead and vote for your favourite performers of 2013.

Production designing is one area of filmmaking that often goes unnoticed, but you can't expect a good film without the help of this department. Here are the five nominees of this category.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag: From Farhan Akhtar's wardrobe to the interior of the train, everything of the film was touched up with perfection, which ultimately resulted into a believable film, even the background of the swimming pool was taken care of. The team of 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' put extra emphasis on getting the quintessential old Delhi charm right. Not at a single point in the film, the audience questioned the feel of the film. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's film is the first nominee in this category.

Goliyon Ki Raaslela - Ram Leela: Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for elaborate and grand sets, and the people who have to work day and night to make his imagination true belong to the department of production designing. Normally, it is believed that if a director finds the right location, he wins half the battle, but in Bhansali's case, the real work begins right there. The mammoth task of creating shining sets was met with exceptional brilliance in 'Ram Leela'.

Kai Po Che: Why this film? Simply because the whole canvas of the film kept changing at a rapid pace. Though the story was set mostly in one area, but the colourful backdrop of Gujarat had to be shown without getting into the eyes of the viewers. The story and the background were two different things for this film and the director and the production design team had to work in tandem to emerge victorious, which they eventually did.

Raanjhanaa: The story covered a time period of close to ten years which meant travelling of characters from one space to another quite frequently. The first part of the film was set in Benares and the second part was based in Delhi, with clear cut changes in the character graphs of lead actors. Every task related to a character's dressing to his mode of travelling had to be performed twice to get it right. Thankfully, 'Raanjhanaa' emerged as a colourful and engaging film.

Shuddh Desi Romance: Jaipur is popularly known as the pink city, but how would you show it on celluloid? In this case, the only person who can transform the director's dream into reality is the person in-change of the production design team. Didn't you like the final product? Of course, you did. 'Shuddh Desi Romance' is the final film in this list. Now, make your vote count.####
