KOCHI: This year saw a boost in the number of candidates appearing for the IIT-JEE 2012 examination on Sunday.About five lakh candidates are set to take the exam, while last year 4.86 lakh candidates appeared for the same.Candidates are vying for nearly 10,000 seats across the country in 15 Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), Institute of Technology at Banaras Hindu University, and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. The seats in various courses of the institutes (IITs, ITBHU Varanasi and ISM Dhanbad) are allotted strictly on the basis of the All India Rank, category rank, and the choices of each qualified student submitted at the time of counselling. The results of IIT-JEE 2012 are also being used by other institutions for admissions to their courses or programmes. Therefore IIT-JEE 2012 provides performance data to these institutes.Candidates should contact these institutes directly for admission. Many candidates will write the exams in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Thrissur. The introduction of free online applications for girls has lured more girls into applying this year. The largest pool of applications are from Kanpur and Andhra Pradesh in the Madras zone, said sources.Candidates who have not received the admit cards or are unable to see the details of the allotted exam centre should contact the Chairman, JEE of the zonal IIT with relevant documents. It’s time for revision. The all-India ranks will be known through IIT-JEE 2012 websites or SMS on or after May 18 Tips from Ajay Antony, course director, IIT JEE exam, TIME:* Candidates have to identify the key areas in the three subjects for the final revision.* Look at the IITJEE syllabus mentioned in the brochure and check it with the model examinations already taken during preparation.* Identity the topics that can be taken with relative ease.Finish them first as this will give confidence of having covered a large percentage of the quantum of work to be done.* Revision preparation: All knowledge has to be put into practise.Work on the model examinations papers taken done so far.Focus on preselected areas
