Hyderabad: The lack of toilets is forcing students of a Social Welfare Residential school in Telangana's Vikarabad district to relieve themselves in the open in nearby fields.
"The toilets are not functional, so what to do. They are not repairing it,” said a student.
The Telangana government has set August 15 as the deadline to make all cities and municipalities in the state open-defecation free. Funds have been allocated and toilets are being constructed to meet this deadline.
But in Vikarabad’s huge school building, there are 811 students, but not a single functional toilet.
"The toilets in the dormitory block are under construction. The contractor is delaying work. And there is no alternative arrangement for students. So they all have to go to the fields. We have told authorities about the problem,” said school official on condition of anonymity.
The school is located on the main highway, posing additional danger to students.
Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao has warned of action against officials for failing to fulfill the promise to end open-defecation. But, for these students, wait and hope continues.
