New Delhi: With widespread violence engulfing Tibet, India on Friday voiced ‘distress’ over the ‘unsettled situation’ there and hoped all concerned would work to remove the causes of such trouble in the ‘autonomous region of China’ through dialogue.
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday said that India was watching the situation in Tibet.
"We are distressed by reports of the unsettled situation and violence in Lhasa and by the death of innocent people," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said while commenting on the developments in the Tibetan Capital where 10 people died in violence following anti-China protests.
"We would hope that all those involved will work to improve the situation and remove the causes of such trouble in Tibet, which is an autonomous region of China, through dialogue and non-violent means," he said.
Mukherjee indicated in Chandigarh that the government at the highest level would be taking stock of the situation in Tibet.
Since Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was "out of town yesterday, the issue could not be discussed," he said when asked to comment on the developments in the Himalayan region.
