Bangalore: Over a fortnight after Indian doctor Usmane Ghani was picked up by the Saudi Arabian police following a directive of the Crime Branch of Bangalore Police, his family claims that he is still missing. The embassy officials, however, have denied any knowledge of his whereabouts.
Thirty-six-year-old Ghani worked at the King Fahad National Guard Hospital in the Saudi capital of Riyadh and was picked up by the police from his workplace at 2 pm on October 8. Media reports suggest that Bangalore police, which is investigating an alleged plot to assassinate prominent Hindutva leaders and journalists, had directed Saudi police to arrest Ghani.
Worried for her son, Ghani's mother has sought help from the government and media. "I want the government, the police, and the press to help me just like they help Shah Rukh Khan and other 17 people who were detained in Dubai," said the Indian doctor’s mother. She also demanded a visa to go to Saudi Arabia to look for her son.
The Indian doctor, who hails from Dharwad in Karnataka, faced a similar problem in 2008 when he was summoned by the Karnataka Police in connection with a terror case. He was, however, later cleared of the charges.
