BUDHAVARAM (KRISHNA DIST): It’s an amazing and insightful experience to mingle with young students and educate them on health and hygiene, say Kathy Kilgallan and Tess Farrelly, group leaders of a team of 25 students from Ireland who are visiting the city for social service.The 16 boys and nine girls from University college, Dublin, are on a month-long visit to Vijayawada and involved in social work at the Care and Share Municipal High School at Rajarajeswaripet. They started out by repainting the walls of the school and cleaning the premises. They also play and take classes on several developmental issues for the school children everyday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. They also distributed uniforms, notebooks and school bags to 500 students of the school.Speaking to Express, Kathy Kilgallan, who has been working as a teacher for the last seven years in Ireland, said that this is her first visit to Vijayawada. But she has been enjoying herself teaching the children of the school and students in the surrounding villages about health, education and sports. She believes that guiding children in the right direction go a long way in securing their future.An English and Philosophy graduate from Ireland Ciara Doyle and law student Jane Owens feel that it was a good experience to interact with students and teach them about personal hygiene, HIV and other issues.Care and Share Trust director Fr Noel Harper said that this is the second time that Irish students are coming to the city. “Last year also, a batch of students from Ireland visited the campus and offered social service for a month,” he said. As part of their service, they also took out an HIV awareness rally on Bandar road, he added.The new batch of students are keen on another visit to the city and want to teach more students next time.
